Dear alumni and friends
The University of Sydney UK Alumni Association invites you to attend a
SYDNEY IDEAS INTERNATIONAL LECTURE
WINNING THE BATTLE AGAINST THE AUSTRALIAN CANCER:
THE REVOLUTION IN TREATING MELANOMA
Presented by Professor Richard Kefford AM MB BS PhD FRACP
Professor of Medicine, Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney
Director Westmead Institute for Cancer Research, Co-Research Director Melanoma Institute of Australia
Melanoma is a major health problem internationally. It is the third most common cancer in men and women in Australia, and has a disproportionately heavy impact on productive years of life because it is the commonest cause of cancer death in younger adults. Incidence and mortality from melanoma are increasing dramatically in most countries where fair-skinned people live, including the UK, USA and Europe. RK leads a team of investigators associated with the Melanoma Institute of Australia, incorporating the Sydney Melanoma Unit (SMU). MIA is the world’s largest melanoma treatment centre, treating over 2000 new melanoma patients annually.
Until recently, melanoma was regarded as universally fatal once secondary tumors (“metastases”) developed. The disease is highly resistant to traditional forms of treatment, like chemotherapy. Research into the molecular genetics of the disease has uncovered unique vulnerabilities, and clinical trials of highly selective targeted therapies have recently shown dramatic advances in the prospects of patients suffering from the “Australian” cancer.
Professor Kefford will be introduced by Professor Andrew J S Coats, former Dean of Medicine and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sydney. Currently Norwich Research Park Professor-at-Large at UEA, Norwich, United Kingdom.
